Somerville Open Studios 2026: Discovering the Magic

If you find yourself in the Boston area this weekend, May 2–3, prepare for a city-wide transformation. Somerville Open Studios (SOS) 2026 is officially here, and it remains one of the largest and most vibrant celebrations of local creativity in the country.

This year, over 420 artists are opening their doors across 120+ locations. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just someone who enjoys a good Saturday stroll, the energy in the streets—fueled by the iconic SOS trolleys and the buzz of Davis and Union Squares—is infectious.

The Theme: "RE"

The 2026 event centers around the theme "RE"—inviting us to revisit, rediscover, and reimagine the art that defines this community. From the "Artwear" fashion show at the Crystal Ballroom to the "RE-discovering SOS" exhibit at City Hall, the city is literally wearing its heart on its sleeve.

A Must-Visit: Alexandra Rozenman & Art School 99

Among the hundreds of talented creators, one stop you absolutely cannot miss is Joy Street Studios (86 Joy Street, Studio #37), home to the whimsical and profound world of Alexandra Rozenman and her beloved Art School 99.

Alexandra is a Russian-American painter whose work feels like a fever dream in the best way possible. Her narrative-driven oil paintings—like the standout “Healing Each Other Under the Moonlight”—often blend memory, humor, and a touch of the surreal.

Why Art School 99 is Special:

  • A Sanctuary for Creativity: More than just a studio, it’s a hub for "salon-style" learning where students (from kids to adults) pair their brushwork with Russian tea or French wine.

  • Narrative Magic: Alexandra’s style explores "otherness" and "reinvention," themes that resonate deeply with this year’s "RE" theme.

  • The Experience: Stepping into her studio isn't just about looking at a wall; it’s about engaging with the storytelling process that has taken her from the Soviet underground to the heart of the American art scene.

Tips for the Weekend

  1. Catch the Trolley: It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s the best way to navigate the sprawl from Brickbottom to Teele Square.

  2. Start at the Armory: Grab a map and check out the "First Look" exhibit to scout which artists you want to prioritize.

  3. Wear Walking Shoes: You’ll be ducking into historic lofts, hidden alleyways, and cozy home studios.

Somerville Open Studios is a reminder that art isn't just something found in quiet museums—it's alive, breathing, and happening right in our backyard. See you at Joy Street!
